Apple May Announce New iOS Game Subscription Service On March 25

Monday, March 25th is already shaping up to be one of Apple’s biggest events in a long time, and it may be getting bigger. We already expect there to be a new video streaming service as well as magazine subscriptions coming out of the Steve Jobs Theater, and there are strengthening claims that some sort of finance partnership with Goldman Sachs is in the offing, too. Now, Bloomberg is also reporting that we may see a new iOS game subscription service for the first time.

We’ve been hearing claims of some sort of game subscription being in the work for months, with Apple offering a bundle of games for a monthly subscription price. The obvious comparison is a Netflix for games, with developers having been signed up in order to allow their wares to be added to the subscription’s library.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is likely to only allow paid-for games into the subscription for obvious reasons, meaning anything that’s free-to-play is out. That includes some pretty big names like Fortnite being out in the cold, but we think that game’s probably doing just fine on its own.

If you’re wondering how developers would be paid, it’s actually as simple as the income being split among all developers, according to Bloomberg.

“The company would collect these monthly fees, then divide up the revenue between developers based on how much time users spend playing their games.”

If Apple does indeed announce something akin to a Netflix for gaming on Monday, it will be quite the day for the Apple-faithful. We’ll be keeping you abreast of everything that happens, so keep your eyes peeled for the latest.
