Apple Is Readying iOS 16.5.1 While We Wait For iOS 17

Apple is currently testing iOS 16.5.1, according to a new report. The update is being tested alongside iOS 17 which was announced during WWDC last month but is not expected to ship to the public until this fall.

Little is known about this iOS 16.5.1 release and Apple hasn’t announced it or shared a developer beta version.

But MacRumors reports that the new update has been spotted in its website analytics, suggesting that it might be getting ready for release within the next couple of weeks.

The report notes that these kinds of updates are normally relatively minor ones, however.

Minor updates like iOS 16.5.1 are typically focused on bug fixes, stability improvements, and security patches, rather than new features. Apple’s Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter does not work properly with iPhones running iOS 16.5, but the issue was resolved in the iOS 16.6 beta last month, so a fix is likely to be included in iOS 16.5.1 as well.

If Apple does release the new iOS 16.5.1 update to the public we cane expect it to also hare details about what it includes — whether that’s bug fixes are improvements to security.

As for iOS 16, that’s now available in beta form with Apple likely to aim for a release window in or around September. That’s also when Apple is expected to announce the new iPhone 15 lineup alongside new Apple Watches.
