Apple’s Upcoming iOS 27 Update Adds New ‘iPhone Handoff’ Feature

Apple is set to release the iOS 27 software update to the world later this month, and one of the new features will make it easier for people to switch between two iPhones while continuing to use the same phone number on each.

Apple had previously announced the new feature as part of its WWDC 2026 keynote on June 8, alongside a number of other features on the same slide. Apple didn’t get into details as to what the feature would do.

Now, MacRumors reports on a new video that shows how the feature will work using two simulated iPhones running in the Xcode 27 Devices Hub.

The iPhone Handoff feature can be set up via the Cellular menu within the Settings app. During that setup process, the user can choose which iPhone will be the one they use the most. That becomes the main device, while the other iPhone will be treated as the secondary device.

Apple says the user’s eSIM remains on the main iPhone, while the secondary iPhone uses a companion eSIM that allows users to switch between the two devices while using the same number.

Unsurprisingly, it appears the feature will require carrier support in order to work. It seems that T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany will be among the first to support iPhone Handoff.
