Watch: 20 Years Of macOS Evolution From OS X To Catalina Shown In Timelapse Video

Apple’s macOS has been around for a long, long time at this point. Called Mac OS X for the majority of its lifetime, the Apple operating system has been used by millions of people over the last 20 years and it’s probably fair to say that the software itself has changed in all kinds of ways. As you’d expect over the course of two decades.

The very first release of Mac OS X arrived in March of 2001 and it’s truly gone from strength to strength ever since. And if you’re a big enough nerd like us you’re going to really enjoy seeing that happen in this pretty amazing timelapse video.

Created by Martin Nobel and shared to YouTube, the video shows all of the major macOS releases being installed in a virtual machine and then shown off for good measure. Check it out.

Apple’s macOS 11 Big Sur announcement at WWDC 2020 marked the end of the macOS X era which began in 2001. In memory of such an event, I will be installing every single version of the macOS operating system, from 10.0 Cheetah to 10.15 Catalina.

This really is a surprisingly fun way to spend five minutes and we’d heartily suggest you check it out. There were some great releases in those 20 years although, admittedly, there were some real stinkers. Unfortunately, it’s possible that macOS Catalina might turn out to be one of them!
