Upgraded Neural Engine Tipped To Bring Huge iPhone 16 AI Boost

There have been repeated rumors that Apple intends to make a big AI push throughout 2024 with new features coming to Siri and the iPhone in particular.

Now, a new report appears to claim that the improvements will be thanks in part to a new Neural Engine that will offer the performance required to make that happen.

A new Economic Daily News report suggests that Apple’s upcoming M4 and A18 chips will have upgraded chips that will “greatly increase the number of built-in AI computing cores.” If correct, iPhones, iPads, and Macs can look forward to faster AI processing which could be key for any plans Apple has for Siri in the future.

This year, it will not only greatly strengthen the AI computing power of M3 and A17 processors, but also significantly increase the number of AI computing cores and performance of the new generation of M4 and A18 processors, and the carrying rate of AI applications in all product lines will be greatly improved

Apple has long been thought to have designs on making leaps in the AI arena and is working on its own ChatGPT-like Large Language Model to make that happen. Siri has long been the poor relation alongside competing products from Amazon and Google, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT has further shown how Apple has fallen behind the curve. New hardware could help fix that, but it’s only half the story.

Apple’s expected to hold its annual WWDC event in June and that could be when we see iOS 18, macOS 15, and other software updates debut. If so, those will likely sport improved AI features if the previous reports are accurate.
