The New Formula E Car Is All-Wheel Drive And Faster Than An F1 Car

Formula E motorsport has announced its latest electric racing car, dubbed the Gen3 EVO. It’s an updated version of the Gen3 car that arrived last season and will be used during next season’s races.

The new Gen3 car was not only lighter than the previous one but it’s also more powerful, Electrek reports. The EV adds a front motor to the setup, although it’s only used for braking, while the rear friction brakes are no longer present.

As a result, the rear wheels are only braked by using the rear motor using regenerative braking — the result is a full 600kW.

Despite all of that, it wasn’t all that much faster when on the track — something the Gen3 EVO will hope to address.

Not only has Hankook provided stickier tires (with 5-10% more grip, and made of 35% recycled materials) which should help to harness some of the car’s additional power, Formula E has also taken the rather unique move (in the world of formula cars) of activating the Gen3 car’s front motor for thrust, not just regen – thus making its cars all-wheel drive.

All of this means that the 0-60 time of the new Gen3 EVO is just 1.82 seconds which is 30% quicker than an F1 car and 36% faster than the old Gen3 EV, making this quite the monster. Alongside the impressive figures is a redesign which makes the EV look every bit the part.
