Tesla’s Vision-Based Park Assist Is Rolling Out With Mixed Reviews

Tesla has started to roll out its vision-based park assist and the reviews it’s receiving are mixed to say the least.

The new offering comes after Tesla started to lean more on cameras following an October 2022 decision to ditch using ultrasonic sensors to measure things like the distance between cars.

They were used for, among other features, park assist. Now, Tesla has started to roll out the first park assist that uses the new cameras.

The new 2023.6.9 update is now rolling out for some people, with the release notes making it clear that people should still pay attention even when the car is parking itself.

Tesla Vision Park Assist provides visual and audio alerts of surrounding objects. This feature uses the occupancy network to predict high-definition outlines of objects 360 degrees around the car.

So far we’ve seen some good and bad responses to this. One tweet shows the cameras being particularly accurate as confirmed by a tape measure. But there was another tweet that showed that the camera system can make some big mistakes, including one driver whose bike rack is continually seen as an obstruction.

It’s still early dates for the vison-based park assist of course, so we’ll see how things pan out from here.
