Tesla Model Y Refresh Reportedly Saw 50,000 Preorders On Day One

After a long wait, Tesla finally updated the hugely popular Model Y electric vehicle last week with the so-called Juniper refresh available for preorder by those in China.

The EV will then go on sale in the United States and other parts of the world in due course. If the Chinese launch is anything to go by, Tesla can expect big things — the company reportedly saw 50,000 orders placed on the first day of preorders.

According to a CarNewsChina post based on a Weibo post by a Chinese car blogger, the 50,000 preorders all arrived on January 10, while nearly 300 orders were reportedly placed at one Tesla store on its own. Other stores saw preorders exceed 100 units — the company has more than 300 stores in China.

However, getting those preorders in nice and early doesn’t mean that buyers will get their new Model Y any time soon.

“According to the Tesla China store salesperson, even if a consumer pays the intention deposit now and queue up, he/she will still have to wait until April or May to pick up the car,” the report explains.

The Juniper Model Y was announced in two different trim levels with RWD and long-range AWD on offer. Prices in China start at 263,500 yuan (35,950 USD) and 303,500 yuan (41,400 USD), respectively. A Tesla salesperson reportedly told Chinese media that the preorders “exploded” on launch day.
