Android Designed To Be Open, Not Safe, Says Android Head

Oliver Haslam·February 28, 2014
It seems that Google may have just fallen foul of one of the pitfalls of having engineers running the company rather than people that are more adept at giving a politician's answer to some tough questions. Google's head honcho of Android, Sundar Pichai, has been in attendance at this week's Mobile World Congress, and it seems he's given a very interesting answer to a mildly interesting question.

List Of Samsung Galaxy Devices Getting Official Android 4.4.2 KitKat Update

Ben Reid·February 19, 2014
Unless you happen to be in ownership of a newish Google Nexus device, the point at which a new Android release will reach your particular device is dependent on a series of variables. But while the respective interventions of both carrier and OEM can often throw a spanner in the works, Samsung is usually fairly efficient with regards to turnaround, and has today released a list of devices that will see the very latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat update. Check below to discover if your Samsung smartphone or tablet has made the cut.

Samsung Could’ve Bought Android, But Turned The Offer Down

Ben Reid·February 17, 2014
Samsung is one of the most prolific carriers of Google's Android. Save a couple of half-hearted Windows Phone efforts over the past couple of years, the Korean company has consistently churned out swathes of smartphones running the ubiquitous software, and considering how many hundreds of millions of handsets out there are on Android, the $50 million Google paid to acquire Android nearly a decade ago looks a shrewd bit of business. But it has now emerged that in actual fact, Andy Rubin, one of the founding members of the Android team, actually pitched the product to the Galaxy maker out in Seoul, a proposition that Samsung unequivocally - and perhaps, regrettably - baulked at.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Compares Android Fragmentation To Europe

Ben Reid·February 9, 2014
Although company executives and CEOs spend most of their public speaking time discussing affairs concerning their own business and products, it's always interesting to hear what the big names have to say about rivals. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Apple CEO Tim Cook was asked whether the ongoing Mac vs. Windows PC battle was in any way similar to the the rivalry between iOS and Android. This analogy is frequently used by commentators and tech fans alike, after all, but Cook completely disagrees that the two famous rivalries are comparable, and here's why.

Microsoft Offers Lumia 1020 / 1520 In Exchange For Your Old iPhone 4 / 4s, Galaxy S2

Ben Reid·February 6, 2014
Although Microsoft has a nice, intuitive mobile OS and a decent selection of handsets on which to run it, Windows Phone is missing one major component - customers. As such, we've seen a number of promotional, trade-in offers over the past couple of weeks, including a free Lumia 520 / 521 for those willing to pay $100 for an Xbox Music pass. But if you're in the market for something a little more high-end, the latest offer from the software maker, which will net you a free Lumia 1020 or Lumia 1520 (albeit on contract) in exchange for an old Galaxy S2 / iPhone 4/4s, may just prove too tempting.
