If you’re in Europe and happen to find yourself in an area with no cellular service, you’re about to have a new way to communicate with people. Or at least, you will by the end of this year with satellite video calling set to come online.
Tests for video calling over a satellite connection rather than the more usual cellular or WiFi option have been ongoing for some time now, but now Vodafone has announced that it’s made it work in the real world — and it proved it by making a call in an area of no coverage in the United Kingdom.
Vodafone has successfully made the world’s first space video call using normal 4G/5G smartphones and satellites that will allow multiple users in areas of no mobile coverage to make and receive video calls, access the Internet and use online messaging services. It is the only satellite technology of its kind built to offer a full mobile broadband experience and paves the way for universal digital connectivity and the closure of mobile coverage gaps.
The move will offer more flexibility for people who find themselves in need of communication options when out of cellular range, with Vodafone saying that it intends to start rolling the feature out in Europe later in 2026. The full rollout isn’t expected to happen until next year, while carriers in the United States aren’t thought to be too far behind.
You will of course need a phone that supports the feature, with the latest iPhones and flagship Android phones already offering satellite-based connectivity when needed.
