Google announced a slew of new AI features at the Google I/O developer event yesterday, and one of those announcements is now available for iPhone users.
The updated Google Gemini feature now supports the ability to have the app respond to its surroundings via a live video feed.
The feature, called Gemini Live, was shown off during the I/O event and saw a phone’s camera pointed at someone’s surroundings. Gemini was then able to comment on what it saw while answering questions and responding to incorrect statements from the user.
Pointing the camera at a shadow and asking why someone was following them, saw Gemini tell the user that it was, indeed, just their shadow.
Gemini Live can also work based on what it sees on your screen, allowing users to ask the AI to comment on or work with what it sees, including websites. Alternatively, files can be uploaded to Gemini Live, as can images and more.
The new feature is available to Gemini users right now, for free, and works on both the iPhone and iPad apps. It’s available in more than 45 different languages across over 150 countries, Google says.
All eyes will now be on Apple and its annual WWDC event, taking place next month, to see if Apple can add any similar features to the iPhone via iOS 19. That update is expected to be announced at WWDC ahead of a release to the public later this year.
