iPhone 6 Plus “Touch Disease” Repair Fix Will Now Cost You $149 From Apple

Apple will now fix or repair iPhone 6 Plus units affected by the unofficially-labeled “Touch Disease” issue for $149 instead of the hefty $329 sum it previously had in place.

The iPhone 6 product line garnered quite a bit of notoriety shortly after its release, with the “bendgate” fiasco marring the debut of its larger variant, and then again, nearly two years later, with the so-called Touch IC Disease making the news. The issue, which entails screen flickering and multi-touch malfunction, had begun to pop up here and there a few months after the release of the 2014 iPhone duo, and seemed to plague the iPhone 6 Plus in particular.

Early hypotheses pegged poor fastening of the Touch IC to the logic board and the lack of a metal shield over the part as possible causes of the problem, though there have been no official confirmations in this regard.

In fact, Apple officially maintains that the issue is caused by units being dropped repeatedly on hard surfaces, which is why the company continues to charge for repairs for affected devices out of warranty. If that is the only cause, and no architectural flaws are to blame, the same issue should be common in other iterations of the iPhone. That does not seem to be the case, however, with Apple itself specifically mentioning the iPhone 6 Plus in its latest statement regarding the issue.

Multi-Touch Repair Program for iPhone 6 Plus

Apple has determined that some iPhone 6 Plus devices may exhibit display flickering or Multi-Touch issues after being dropped multiple times on a hard surface and then incurring further stress on the device.

If your iPhone 6 Plus is exhibiting the symptoms noted above, is in working order, and the screen is not cracked or broken, Apple will repair your device for a service price of $149.

The company has promised to reimburse any customers who may have already paid to get their affected devices serviced “through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider,” with the amount equalling the difference between the amount paid and Apple’s official $149 service cost.

While the new cost offers quite the discount, it still feels like an issue that warrants a free recall and repair. Even if third-party hardware teardowns and diagnoses aren’t given weight, the fact remains that the problem seems to be isolated to one product line, which makes it extremely unlikely that the fault lies with customers alone.
