How To Get Old Instagram Icon Back On iPhone [No Jailbreak Required]

If you’re an Instagram user, and a regular visitor to the iOS App Store to check for updates and the likes, then the chances are that you’ve already downloaded and started to interact with Instagram’s latest app update. Rather than simply offering the obligatory bug fixes and performance enhancements, this latest update introduces a new refined and clinical user-interface that allows users to focus entirely on the uploaded content. The now Facebook-owned company has also taken the opportunity to dramatically rethink and redesign the Instagram app icon that lives on the Home screen. But are you a fan of this new icon?

If the answer to the above question is no, then there is something you can do about it that doesn’t involve attempting to install an older version of the app. You can actually keep the new redesigned interface and slicker experience, but access it through the older iconic Instagram app icon by using a handy little trick put together by UX Designer, Juan Ramirez.

Before moving ahead, you will be glad to know that the trick does not require any jailbreak, and there is no rocket science to it. You will also be able to revert back to the new icon very easily, so it’s definitely worth a try.

Before begining, you can choose to move the current new Instagram app icon to a folder so that it’s out of sight. Since this trick simply involves adding a new icon and not replacing it, hiding or moving the new app icon is entirely your choice.

Step 1: Using Mobile Safari on your iPhone or iPad, visit this GitHub page.

Step 2: When the page loads, follow the big pointing arrow and tap the native Share button to bring up the Share Sheet. Select the Add to Home Screen option.

Step 3: You will now be prompted to add the web-shortcut to your Home screen, for which you can simply tap the Add button. This will essentially place a web-based shortcut with older Instagram app icon on the Home screen, which will trigger the launch of the updated Instagram app.

Step 4: Once done, check back on the Home screen and you will notice the old Instagram app icon there. Tap this icon, for the first time only, you will be asked whether you want to allow “Web” to open “Instagram” on your device. Tap the Open button and you are golden!
