Gurman: Apple Developing New Version Of visionOS For Smart Glasses

Apple is reportedly working on smart glasses as part of its efforts to expand its augmented reality (AR) lineup beyond the bulky Vision Pro headset.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Vision Pro hasn’t been a big hit. At $3,500, it’s expensive, heavy, and can overheat, limiting its appeal. Sales have reportedly fallen short of Apple’s expectations.

Gurman in his Power On newsletter says Apple’s Vision Products Group is looking to develop lightweight smart glasses, similar to Meta’s Ray-Ban collaboration. However, don’t expect them anytime soon as a launch is likely three or more years away. Apple is already testing a version of its visionOS software for these glasses, with user studies underway at its offices.

Codenamed “Atlas,” this project is being led by Apple’s hardware engineering team at a secretive Santa Clara facility. Despite layoffs last year, remaining staff are still developing AR technology and testing future display components.

Apple is also planning a more affordable version of the Vision Pro. By using cheaper components, the company hopes to sell this model for around $1,600 — the price of a high-end iPhone. Originally targeted for release in late 2024, the project is still in development.

Apple is also collaborating with Sony to bring PlayStation VR2 controller support to the Vision Pro. This could make the headset more appealing to gamers, adding new functionality for virtual reality experiences.
