Galaxy Gear Smart Watch Specs Surface Ahead Of September Announcement

September 4th is the expected date of the arrival of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3, a device that smartphone fans have been waiting on ever since the company released its flagship Galaxy S4 some months back. But alongside that unveiling, we’re anticipating the very first smart watch effort from the South Korean outfit in the form of the Galaxy Gear. Today, for the very first time, GigaOM has divulged some of the specs of the wearable gadget, and although there aren’t as many details as some prospective Galaxy Gear owners might have liked, we finally have some reliable knowledge about the device’s hardware.

According to GigaOM, which cites developer sources in making its claims about the Galaxy Gear, the device will pack a 2.5-inch OLED display, which will, of course, be a touch-screen. There’ll also be a dual-core processor for solid performance, while the battery life should also be sufficient to keep things ticking over.

As far as connectivity goes, there report claims the Galaxy Gear will include Bluetooth 4.0 support, while a bunch of sensors, including an accelerometer, will also feature. The device also looks set to include a camera and speaker, both of which will be fitted into the strap.

Although details regarding software are at a premium, GigaOM reckons Samsung will be using the device to plug its own app distribution suite, rather than merely pointing consumers to the Google Play Store. The search giant has been wary of Samsung’s dominance in Android space, and although the Galaxy maker is far off boasting Play Store-like popularity, the company certainly has the means and the motive.

Apple is also said to be preparing its own iWatch, with reports earlier this year suggesting a team of as many as 100 engineers and developers working tirelessly within Cupertino headquarters on its creation. As we’ve seen umpteen times, both Samsung and Apple are fiercely competitive, and it will be interesting to see how this particular battle takes shape.

We expect the Galaxy Gear to be announced at Samsung Unpacked 2013 on September 4th, along with the Galaxy Note 3. We’ll be covering the event in its entirety, so stay tuned to our coverage here at Redmond Pie!
