Running out of storage is a common issue for smartphone users. However, you can free up space on your iPhone and iPad by following these steps.
The smartphones we use daily store thousands of media files that we access and own. It is only natural for storage to fill up suddenly, sometimes even causing the phone to slow down.

To restore performance, you need to free up storage space by clearing out files or junk data that should be discarded. If you aren’t sure how to do this, check out the following tips for freeing up storage space on your iPhone and iPad. At least free up space is the most comfortable way to make it easy to access dugoutcentral.com without any distraction.
Delete built-in iPhone and iPad apps
In the past, Apple did not allow users to delete built-in apps. This meant that pre-installed apps remained on the device even if we never used them. However, starting with iOS 10, Apple allowed users to delete these apps. Here is how to delete built-in iPhone and iPad apps:
- Open Settings
- Select the General menu, then iPhone Storage
- Tap the app you want to remove
- Then select Offload App or Delete App
If you find that you need the app later, simply open the App Store and search for it to reinstall it.
Automatically delete unused apps
You can manually delete apps using the method described above. However, if you prefer a hassle-free approach, your iPhone and iPad can do it automatically. One of the capabilities of newer iOS versions is the ability to remove apps that are no longer in use. iOS can learn which apps on your iPhone or iPad are used frequently and which are rarely used.
How to enable this feature:
- Go to Settings
- Select iTunes & App Store
- Then enable Offload Unused Apps
- Move photos to the Cloud
Given how often we take photos and receive them from friends, it is inevitable that storage will eventually fill up. One way to free up internal storage is to move photos and other media to the Cloud. Fortunately, Apple has its own cloud service: iCloud.
Moving files this way does not delete the photos from your iPhone; instead, it replaces them with smaller, low-resolution versions. You can still view the photos stored in the Cloud, albeit in a smaller format. And if you click on the photo, it will download in its original resolution.
How to move photos to iCloud:
- Open Settings
- Select Photos
- Enable iCloud Photos and select Optimize iPhone Storage
If your iCloud storage starts running low, you will need to purchase more space to increase your storage capacity.
Adjust Camera Quality
We know that iPhone cameras can produce high-resolution photos and videos. High resolution naturally results in large file sizes, causing storage to fill up quickly. However, you can easily adjust the settings to lower the resolution. You can do this by turning off Smart HDR.
- Open Settings
- Select Camera
- Disable Smart HDR. HDR photography captures multiple images in a single shot.
- Enable Keep Normal Photo
Lower video quality
The latest iPhones are capable of recording video in 4K at 60fps. A single minute of video in this format can take up 400 MB—far more than 720p HD at 30fps, which uses only 40 MB per minute.
If you don’t strictly need high-resolution video, it is better to set your video to a lower format. Here’s how:
- Open Settings
- Select Camera
- Select Record Video
- Then tap on your preferred video setting.
Delete podcasts you no longer listen to
Some users prefer downloading and saving podcasts they have already listened to. However, a more effective approach is to stream podcasts, as this doesn’t require storage space.
If you have already saved podcasts, here is how to delete them:
- Open the Podcasts app
- Go to the Library tab in the bottom bar
- Tap Downloaded Episodes
- Swipe left on the podcast you want to delete
- Then select Remove.
Use music streaming services
Just like with podcasts, instead of storing music on your iPhone, it is better to listen to it online or via streaming. You can do this using Apple Music. Additionally, you can even add your own songs to Apple Music so other users can listen to them. Those are several ways to free up memory. However, if you have tried the steps above and your storage is still full, there is no other option but to replace your smartphone with one that has higher specifications.
