New iPhone Feature Could Lock Devices If They’re Snatched

Apple is reportedly working on a feature that will thwart iPhone thieves who steal devices that are unlocked, ready to be wiped and sold on. According to a report, Apple is keen to add a new iPhone feature that will automatically lock devices if they are snatched.

According to a 9to5Mac report, Apple is working on a feature that will detect if an iPhone has been snatched from a user’s hand in a similar way to Android’s Theft Detection Lock.

These systems will rely on several signals, including the iPhone’s accelerometer, to detect when the device has been snatched from the user’s hand. Once the snatching is confirmed, it will automatically lock the iPhone.

It’s also reported that Apple may detect the distance an iPhone is from any paired Apple Watch. The feature will also work in a similar way to Stolen Device Protection in that an iPhone will be automatically locked and restricted if not in a familiar location or connected to a recognized WiFi network.

However, it’s as-yet unclear when this kind of feature might be announced, let alone made available. However, Apple’s WWDC event will kick off on June 8, with iOS 27 set to be unveiled. It’s possible this feature could be announced at that time, ahead of a September release to the public. The report notes that the feature is in active development, so that could well be the case.
