Since it emerged that there’d be two configurations of the iPhone 6 – a 4.7-inch model and a larger, 5.5-inch variant – fans and commentators have offered numerous suggestions as to how Apple plans to differentiate between them through naming. There’s been a lingering suspicion that the handset may follow the iPad’s lead with ‘iPhone Air’, as well as the very plausible ‘iPhone 6L’, but according to information obtained by a fairly reliable source, it’ll be called the ‘iPhone 6 Plus’.
According to the folks at Japanese Apple blog Macotakara, the 4.7-inch model will be known simply as the ‘iPhone 6’, but its larger cousin will be given the iPhone 6 Plus moniker to avoid any confusion when both hit the consumer market.
Personally, it seems a strange one, and of all the names that have been floating around, I was fairly sure that iPhone 6L, or some other number-letter combination, would turn out to be the real deal.
It’s not the first time that ‘Plus’ has been mentioned as a possible name, but it is the first time in a while that we’ve heard it, and while we’re naturally a little skeptical, there’s definitely reason to believe that we may finally have the true name of Apple’s impending phablet.
For one, it’s a day before the announcement. By this time tomorrow, we’ll know for sure, but given how close we are to the event, it seems a tad more likely that this information is indeed true.
Moreover, the source of this information is quite telling. Macotakara made the correct call on the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c prior to Apple’s two-pronged announcement this time last year, and so while we’ll reserve judgment on whether we feel that ‘Plus’ is a good name or not, we’ll know everything after the keynote at the Flint Center tomorrow has commenced.
The word Plus does underline the suggestion that the 5.5-inch iPhone could include more over the 4.7-inch model than just a larger display, and with a report earlier today that the device may offer iPad-like landscape mode, there’s a good chance that bigger will, in this case, mean better.
