Xbox One Keyboard And Mouse Support With Razer Accessories Announced

Microsoft is planning on enabling keyboard and mouse support for its Xbox One console and has announced a strategic partnership with Razer in order to bring “the best possible mouse and keyboard experience” to the gaming console.

As it currently stands, gaming on Xbox One is primarily through a wired or wireless Xbox One controller that has typically been the major input mechanism for this type of platform in a gaming environment.

In order to move past that and to give gamers the maximum amount of choice in what they play and how they play it, Microsoft is unlocking the potential of Xbox One by bringing keyboard and mouse support. This functionality will initially be unlocked for select Xbox One Insiders in the coming weeks:

At Xbox, we’re committed to bringing gamers more choice in what they play, who they play with and how they play. We’re also equally committed to providing developers with the best platform to create and deliver the best gaming experience on Xbox. Today we’re announcing a new way to play games on Xbox: we’re enabling mouse and keyboard support on Xbox One for select Xbox Insiders in the coming weeks.

With that unlocking, pretty much all wireless and wired USB keyboards and mice will function without issues on Xbox One but Microsoft is looking to give gamers a unique and more premium experience through its collaboration with Razer, a company that the Redmond-based business describes as a “premiere peripheral manufacturer in the gaming hardware space.”

That partnership will see Razer create hardware designed specifically for Xbox One that can tap directly into the Chroma lighting effects to enhance the immersive feeling of the gaming experience.

From a gaming perspective, it’s not reasonable to assume that games will just work with mice and keyboards when the ability is turned on. Gaming developers and publishers will need to keep functionality in mind and build and develop their games to take advantage of the new capabilities of the hardware. Not all games will be suited to this type of input mechanism but it will certainly open up a world of possibilities for specific games and genres.

More information will be presented about the partnership with Razer and future gaming support on November 10.
