WSJ: iPhone 11 Max To Feature Triple-Lens Camera, 2019 iPhone XR To Get Dual-Lens

The Wall Street Journal has started to report on what the 2019 iPhone lineup will consist of, and at first blush it will be very similar to that of 2018. That is to say that there will be two OLED and one LCD model announced later this year, but what makes things the most interesting here is the camera situation.

According to the report, the iPhone 11 Max will feature three cameras, whereas the updated iPhone XR will also gain an extra lens, giving it two.

We’ve seen renders already suggesting that there will be an all-new camera lens setup this time around, but there was some doubt as to whether any stock should be put into them. This new WSJ report would appear to match up though.

Of the three iPhones set to arrive this year, the belief is that the iPhone 11 Max will have three cameras, whereas the iPhone 11 would have just the two. This would be a return to the pre-iPhone XS days of having the larger iPhone also have a better camera setup, something that doesn’t really fill us with excitement. Not everyone wants a huge phone, but few people will say they want a worse camera setup. We’re holding out hope that at least that part of this report is incorrect.

Moving on to the iPhone XR, the report has the more budget-conscious iPhone also gaining an additional camera, taking its total could to two. The current iPhone XR has been praised for its camera performance despite being a single lens setup, and we do wonder whether sticking with a single lens and reducing the price might be a better option.

This is of course still very early in the year to start making any concrete claims about what Apple may or may not do around September, so we’ll take all of this with a pinch of salt for now.
