Windows 10 Finally Surpasses Windows 7 Marketshare, Now The Most Popular And Used Desktop OS

It may have taken longer than some would have expected, but Microsoft’s Windows 10 is now being used by more people than its most popular predecessor, Windows 7.

This comes after the switch had already taken place among gamers who use Steam, but following the release of the latest numbers from NetMarketShare for December 2018, Windows 10 has finally overtaken Windows 7.

This news has been in the cards for a while now, and throughout 2018 Windows 10 has been gaining ground. That finally came to a head in December, with NetMarketShare now reporting that Windows 10 accounts for 39.22% of marketshare ahead of Windows 7 with 36.90%. There are many reasons why this might have happened in December, with some suggesting that the number of new computers sold in the holiday season was simply enough to tip the scales in Windows 10’s favor.

The rest of the top operating systems is a who’s who of older Windows releases and those running Linux, including the most recent releases of Apple’s macOS. With macOS 10.14 being the most used version of the Mac operating system at just 4.73% of the market it’s clear that Apple’s computers still have a long way to go before getting anywhere near toppling Windows.

That’s something that’s unlikely to ever happen at this point, but it’s always interesting to see just how far the Mac lags behind the sheer volume of PCs that are in use. Historically this has been the case, and everyone including Apple knows it, but there’s something about seeing cold hard figures that drives it home.
