WhatsApp Username Reservations Are Now Live: Here’s How To Claim Yours

WhatsApp is finally rolling out one of its most requested features. After years of rumors and development, users can now begin reserving unique usernames before the feature officially launches worldwide later this year.

The rollout starts gradually, so not everyone will see it immediately. Once available, you’ll receive an in-app notification and can head to Settings > Account > Username to reserve your preferred name.

The biggest advantage of usernames is privacy. Instead of sharing your phone number with someone new, you’ll be able to connect using your username. This makes it easier to join group chats, message businesses, or start conversations while keeping your personal number hidden.

WhatsApp says the feature is completely optional, so users can continue using the app with their phone numbers if they prefer. However, with more than three billion users on the platform, the company is opening reservations early to give people a fair chance to claim the username they want before it becomes widely available.

The company is also introducing a special claims process for creators, businesses, and organizations. Eligible accounts will be able to reserve usernames that match their existing Instagram or Facebook handles, helping them maintain a consistent identity across Meta’s platforms.

To protect user privacy, WhatsApp isn’t creating a public username directory or search system. People won’t be able to browse for usernames or receive suggestions. Instead, someone will need to know your exact username before they can contact you for the first time.

WhatsApp is also adding an optional username key for extra security. If enabled, new contacts will need both your username and this unique key before they can message you.

Usernames will continue rolling out over the coming months, so if you don’t see the option yet, it should arrive soon. If you’ve been waiting to claim a simple or unique username, it’s worth keeping an eye on your WhatsApp settings before someone else grabs it.
