Samsung Galaxy S5 Finally Gets A Release Date

Unless you’ve been hiding away in a cave somewhere, you’ll probably have gleaned that Samsung will be unveiling its flagship Galaxy S5 at next week’s Mobile World Congress. Although we’ve a relatively good idea as to the tech specs, pinning down a release date has proven to be rather more difficult. But an unnamed Samsung exec. has offered a ballpark estimate of the device’s retail date, letting slip to the guys over at GSMArena that the device will hit the scene on around March 13th.

Most reports have suggested that the handset will become available a couple of weeks after MWC, and since the preceding S4 arrived a fortnight after its announcement, this makes a great deal of sense. A landing page over at O2 Germany did have our hopes up earlier on this week that Samsung might even begin shipping before the end of the month, but unfortunately, the Korean outfit’s next big thing is something we’ll almost certainly have to wait a little longer to experience first-hand.

In recent years, Sammy has been pretty good at keeping its sought-after devices under wraps until the 11th hour, and the company must be commended once again, since we’ve no real indication as to the Galaxy S5’s appearance or general form factor.

As far as technical specifications go, however, we do have a bit of a consensus, with reports suggesting that there’ll be two distinct variants of the upcoming device. The higher-end model, which will supposedly cater to the U.S. market, may pack a 5.2-inch 2K display, 8-core Exynos processor, and depending on where you care to read, a 16 or 20-megapixel rear-facing shooter. There’ll also be 3GB of RAM, a substantial 3,000 mAh battery, and as you would expect, the latest Android 4.4 KitKat.

Next week’s Mobile World Congress promises to be a real blockbuster, particularly where Samsung is concerned, and as well as the small matter of the GS5, the company also looks set to take the wraps off its second-gen Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

We will be at MWC, close to the action as the big names unveil some significant new products. If you don’t want to miss a beat, be sure to stay tuned to our coverage here at Redmond Pie!
