RootlessJB 3.0 iOS 12.1.2 Jailbreak Released, Here’s What You Need To Know

Developer and hacker Jake James has announced the release of what he is calling RootlessJB 3.0. Similar to OsirisJailbreak12, rootlessJB 3.0 is currently being offered as a developer-only jailbreak with support for limited devices.

It seems to be full steam ahead in the jailbreak community at the moment. A number of new exploit releases have catapulted certain members of the community into action and have resulted in what could be a number of important releases.

First, we have the aforementioned Osiris12Jailbreak for iOS 12, and now we have this Jake James release, offering initial support for A9, A10, and A11 devices running iOS 12.0 through iOS 12.1.2.

As per, a public tweet announced the release:

RELEASE: rootlessJB 3.0.
– Add initial support for iOS 12.
– Now for now works on A9-A11
– No tweaks or code injection yet
– Spawns SSH via dropbear
– dev-only?
– Read README
– Enjoy!

A follow-up tweet has also confirmed that Jake James is working on adding support for A12 devices and that support for older A7, A8, and A8X devices will be added once an exploit is found and released which applies to those devices. It isn’t important to note that this isn’t a standard jailbreak being offered into the public domain. It doesn’t offer package manager installation in the form of Cydia or Sileo and requires items to be installed to the device via SSH via dropbear.

James has also tweeted to confirm that once the jailbreak supports the installation of tweaks that it won’t need any codesign patch or trustcaching as they will be able to be signed with a legitimate certificate prior to installation. Like OsirisJailbreak12, it will be extremely interesting to see how this jailbreak progresses considering it is currently only being offered for developers and those with the necessary skills. If nothing else, it has managed to unearth another individual in the jailbreak community who has stepped forward with a tool based on the recent exploit releases that we have seen.

rootlessJB does have everything a normal jailbreak has apart from writing in /. *Anything* can be adapted to work with it, even Cydia, but due to how many dependencies it has, it would be a pain to port Cydia.

And since people get confused, rootless doesn’t mean “without root”, it means “without ability to write in the root partition”, although last year *it did have* a remount (and so it will have once it is fixed for 12)
