LG Smart InstaView Refrigerator Is Powered By Alexa & webOS, Features Transparent Touchscreen

If this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has already taught us one thing, it’s definitely that the world of home automation, and more specifically the connected kitchen, is going to blow up to new levels this year.

Not wanting to be outdone by Samsung’s introduction of Family Hub 2.0, LG has now announced that it has taken its Door-in-Door refrigerator range to insane new levels with the introduction of Smart InstaView Refrigerator, bringing the power of webOS, Amazon Voice Services in the form of Alexa, and a stunning transparent touchscreen that instantly turns transparent for a glimpse of the contents inside the fridge.

The kitchen is undoubtedly one of the most important rooms in any modern home, and LG has clearly recognized that judging by the importance it is placing on this latest revamped model.

If you put aside the technical improvements for a second, you’re shown a stunning refrigerator that has a brand new clear window that also doubles up as a 29-inch portrait-orientated touchscreen running webOS. When not looking through the clear window, a 2-megapixel camera placed internally, is tasked with beaming images directly to a connected smartphone, because we all want to know how much milk we’ve got left, right?

The touchscreen and window to the refrigerator is beautiful enough, but it’s perhaps the custom interface and double-tap gesture which turns it from opaque to translucent that really makes jaws drop. This isn’t just a silly gimmick, either. When in touchscreen mode, it’s possible to play movies, browse through endless recipes, access a web browser to browse the Internet, and do pretty much everything else that you would expect to be able to do from a webOS-powered intelligent cooling device. If you’re running low on semi-skimmed milk, or just need some Brie, simply invoke the services of Alexa to add it to a shopping list or instantly place the order for you via your Amazon account.

That’s not all that Alexa can help you with in this case. As LG tells us:

With over 6,000 skills available, Alexa can also control one’s smart home, request car service, set kitchen timers and check the weather – all hands-free by just using your voice. With Alexa, daily tasks in the kitchen – such as cooking or planning for the day – turn into a dynamic, entertaining experience.

The company has also announced that it will be making all of its home appliances just that little bit smarter during 2017 with the integration of WiFi connectivity across the board. LG hasn’t officially announced any pricing for the stunningly insane Smart InstaView Refrigerator, but we can’t imagine that it’ll be cheap.
