The majority of iOS device owners who choose to go down the root of jailbreaking, do so because of the functionality enhancements that it can provide. By installing Cydia as a byproduct of the jailbreak process, users are presented with a near endless supply of tweaks and modifications which can dramatically improve the already excellent user experience of an iPhone or iPad. One such tweak that can provide this enhanced experience is the one that we are pretty sure most community members have heard of, comes from developer Grant Paul (chpwn)and goes by the name of 'Zephyr'.
Last year, company by the name of CutYourSim caused a mixture of excitement, confusion, and subsequent disappointment and cynicism when it released a permanent unlock procedure - only for the service to be abruptly halted once Apple caught wind of what was occurring.
A potential new privacy loophole has been discovered in the way iOS handles the Camera Roll and how apps are granted permission to interact with it. Unsurprisingly, the pitchforks are out all over again.
Samsung's iMessage, Gtalk and other IM service competitor, ChatON, is already available for Bada, BlackBerry, Android and iOS but now it has gained a new platform - the desktop.
I can't remember the last time I opened Cydia and felt genuinely excited about a tweak or modification that had been uploaded to one of the repositories. The platform contains so many packages these days, with more and more being added or updated everyday that it sometimes becomes a bit of a chore to filter through the recent changes and actually find something worth downloading or purchasing. However, this does not apply to a recently submitted tweak from a developer known as K3A which adds a whole new dimension to incoming application notifications.
I have said it before, I am saying it now and no doubt I will say it time and time again, but the most popular tweaks in my personal opinion are the ones that provide either a much needed enhancement to the operating system or an actual real world benefit to users. Aesthetic modifications are all well and good, but tastes change over time and they will no doubt be downloaded, used for a brief time frame and then pushed into obscurity whereas a tweak or modification which provides an actual tangible benefit will stand the test of time.
It is proving to be extremely difficult to keep score in the on going legal disputes between Apple and Motorola, with both companies notching up temporary victories in the last few weeks. Today however, the victory banner will be printed with Apple's name, as the Higher Regional Court in Karlsruhe, Germany, have ruled in the fruit company’s favor against Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. (MMI).
As jailbreaking has become a more widely accepted method of gaining iDevice freedom in the last few years, the Cydia platform has become synonymous with the act. The Cydia name and icon have almost become a visual indication that a device is indeed jailbroken, with all of the jailbreak tools installing Cydia as a matter of course with each fresh jailbreak. While it is extremely likely that this will always be the case, surely a bit of competition is good for community?
Apple has just released a new ad that shows off the "harmony" throughout its ecosystem that's thanks to iCloud. The ad opens with a user choosing to use iCloud upon configuring a 4S. A set of sequences then begin where the user performs an action on their iPhone 4S, and it shows up on their other Apple devices.
