Apple’s Global Offices, Data Centers, Stores All Now Powered By 100% Clean Energy

Apple has always tried to make sure that it has the planet and environment at the center of everything it does, or at least that’s the line we get when Tim Cook and his team announces new products.

It’s all very good talking the talk, but now we know that Apple also walks the walk after the company announced that its global facilities, including offices, data centers, and retail outlets are all powered by 100% clean energy.

Apple confirmed that this 100% figure includes facilities across no fewer than 43 countries including all the big names – the UK, China, and India as well as its home turf, the United States. CEO Tim Cook says that his company is committed to a project to ensure Apple is “leaving the world better than we found it.”

“We’re committed to leaving the world better than we found it. After years of hard work we’re proud to have reached this significant milestone,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We’re going to keep pushing the boundaries of what is possible with the materials in our products, the way we recycle them, our facilities and our work with suppliers to establish new creative and forward-looking sources of renewable energy because we know the future depends on it.”

Apple reports that it has 25 renewable energy projects in flight around the globe following investment in solar arrays, bio-gas fuel cells, and wind farms, among other projects. This all totals 626 megawatts of generation capacity, Apple says. Part of this is provided by a number of solar panels located on the roof of Apple’s brand new campus in Apple Park.

Speaking with Fast Company, Apple VP of environment, policy, and social initiatives Lisa Jackson said that the company had been working to sign new energy deals that would cover some of its offices in countries such as India, Israel, Mexico, Brazil, and Turkey.

“If you look at our trajectory, for the last couple of years we’ve been close to 100%,” she says. “It’s just four percent more, but it’s four percent done the right way. So this announcement feels like a classic Apple product release. Like our products, we sweat the details, we have pretty strict standards, and we prefer to wait and meet our standards than to rush and make a claim.”

Along with Apple, manufacturing partners such as Pegatron and Finisar are also committed to using renewable energy.
