Apple Resetting iCloud Backup Data On September 22nd Ahead Of iOS 5 Gold Master

The news comes from a statement published on Apple’s Developer Board which says that all data backed up by beta-testers on iCloud servers will be reset (i.e. deleted) on September 22nd. No reason has been given for why this is being done, but we have reason to believe that this is an indication that we’ll see the Golden Master release of iOS 5 very soon, perhaps as soon as September 23rd.

The Golden Master release of iOS 5 will be the final build of iOS 5 before it is released to the public. It will be equivalent to “Release to Manufacturing”, a term used for software which is complete and has “gone gold”.

From Apple Developer Boards:

On Thursday, September 22, the iCloud Backup data will be reset. Backing up to iCloud or restoringfrom an iCloud backup will be unavailable from 9 AM PDT – 5 PM PDT. If you attempt a backup orrestore during this time, you will receive an alert that the backup or restore was not successful. After this reset, you will be unable to restore from any backup created prior to September 22. A full backup will happen automatically the next time your device backs up to iCloud.

iOS 5 stable is expected to be released sometime in October, with one report suggested an October 10th release date. There are also rumors of Apple holding media event on October 5th where, if it turns out to be real, we expect the official release date of iOS 5 to be announced alongside not one, but two new iPhones: a low-end iPhone 4 look-alike (called iPhone 4S) aimed at people who cannot afford a full-fledged iPhone and a high-end all-new next-generation iPhone with a dual-core A5 chip, an 8 megapixel camera and larger screen.

If you’ve been using the iOS 5 betas and have been backing up data to the iCloud, then it is highly suggested that you connect your iOS device with your computer and make a backup using iTunes.

As always, we will inform our dear readers of iOS 5 GM as soon as it is released. Stay tuned!
