According to a report from The Elec, Apple is planning a serious screen upgrade for a future iPhone, and it’s the same tech found in the latest M4 iPad Pro.
That display? Apple calls it Ultra Retina XDR, and it’s powered by something called tandem OLED.

Basically, it uses two OLED panels stacked together to boost brightness, improve color accuracy, and deliver ultra-fast response times. Think brighter whites, deeper blacks, and smoother animations, all packed into your iPhone display.
This tech made its debut in the 2024 M4 iPad Pro, which Apple said has “the world’s most advanced display.” It delivers up to 1000 nits of full-screen brightness (with a peak of 1600 nits in HDR), and handles highlights and shadows like a pro.
Now Apple wants to bring that magic to the iPhone.

The catch? It’s not happening anytime soon. Apple is reportedly still in talks with LG and Samsung to make it happen, and mass production isn’t expected to start until 2028. So don’t expect to see this on the iPhone 17 or even the 18 or 19.
Still, it’s exciting to know Apple is already planning the next big leap in display tech. Current iPhone screens are already great, but an Ultra Retina XDR iPhone? That’s going to be on a whole new level.
