2018 iPhone’s 18W USB-C Charger May Take A While To Become Available Separately, Here’s Why

Reports have suggested that Apple will bundle a new 18W USB-C charger with its 2018 iPhones for a number of weeks now, allowing them to charge more quickly while also moving another Apple device to the USB-C world, and while Macotakara is now reporting the same thing, it does have an interesting twist on the story.

While the report does say that the 2018 iPhones will indeed have the new charger bundled in their boxes, anyone wanting to pick one up for use with an existing iPhone is going to be out of luck.

The reason for this is a simple case of supply constraints, something that is becoming all too familiar when it comes to Apple launches over the past few years. According to Macotakara, supplies of the new 18W USB-C chargers will be so limited, Apple will not be selling them separately at launch with the only way to get one being to pick up a brand new iPhone. Production is said to be at “full capacity” in order to make sure there are enough chargers for new iPhones, but that will simply not be enough to allow them to be sold alone.

Reports earlier this month suggested that the new 18W USB-C charger will be smaller and slimmer than the current 5W charger with which people will be familiar. Images were also shared of what was claimed to be the charger in question, showing that it was also smaller than the 12W charger that is shipped with iPads currently.

When Apple does get around to making the new 18W USB-C charger available to everyone, existing iPhone X and iPhone 8 / 8 Plus owners will be able to pick one up and benefit from increased charging speeds, too.
