Grand Theft Auto V Announced, First Trailer Coming 2nd November

We don’t normally cover video games here at Redmond Pie, but the game we’re covering in this post isn’t just any game, this is, arguably, the most popular video game series in the world today (at least, among young adults and above): Grand Theft Auto.

Rockstar Games – the folks behind the venerable series – has formally announced the next game in the series: it’s called Grand Theft Auto V and its first trailer will be released on 2nd November.

The news comes straight from Rockstar Games’ official Twitter account in the form of, well, a tweet which links to Rockstar’s official website. Upon loading the official website, gamers are treated to a high-resolution logo of the next title in the Grand Theft Auto series: Grand Theft Auto V.

The first Grand Theft Auto video game was released in late 1997. The series didn’t catch true mainstream attention until the release of the revolutionary, game-changing Grand Theft Auto III which was released for the Sony PlayStation 2 back in 2001. GTA III is, without any doubt, one of the most influential video games of all time. Its addictive, do-whatever-you-want open-world gameplay has influenced just about every game released since. GTA III spawned a new category of open-world sandbox-style imitations which were dubbed as GTA clones – games which played and looked like GTA but never quite got the entire formula right the way Rockstar Games did in 2001. And now soon, iOS and Android users will be able to play GTA III, right on their smartphones and tablets.

There are a total of thirteen games in the GTA series. Since the revolutionary GTA III, we’ve seen multiple GTA games: GTA Vice City, GTA San Andreas, two spin-offs for the PSP, GTA IV and GTA Chinatown Wars (for Nintendo DS).

GTA IV – the last major release (2008) – pushed the open-world sandbox style genre ahead and, if Rockstar Games’ immaculate track record is anything to go by, GTA V will push the genre ahead even further!

Rockstar has not revealed anything else about the upcoming title. All we know about it at the moment is that the game is now official and that we’ll get our first look at it on Wednesday, 2nd November next week.

While it’s hard to say anything about its release date, I personally say don’t expect it before the 2012/2013 holiday season.
