ZTE Officially Launches The First Phone With Under-Display Camera

The battle to make phone bezels as small as possible led to the arrival of notches and cutouts, but ZTE isn’t settling for that. The company has now officially announced the Axon 20 5G, a phone that offers a 32-megapixel front-facing camera that you can’t see.

That’s because the camera sits beneath the screen, which happens to be a 6.9-inch OLED panel with a 90Hz refresh rate.

ZTE says that it’s developed special software that will deal with all of the downsides of putting a camera beneath a screen, namely glare and issues with color reproduction. We’ll have to wait and see how that pans out.

Around the back, ZTE has added a 64-megapixel camera alongside an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens. There’s a depth and macro sensor running at 2-megapixels, too

While it’s doubtful this thing will ship internationally, the ZTE Axon 20 5G will be available in China from September 10. It’s worryingly inexpensive as well, costing around $320 based on local currency conversions.

That sounds a little too cheap for this to be a decent camera built into a decent phone, but the fact it’s happening at all is important.

Now it’s over to the likes of Samsung and Apple to bring similar – or likely, improved – tech to their flagships.
