The news comes straight from iPhone hacker and iPhone Dev-Team member MuscleNerd in the form of an update sent out from his Twitter account in which he shares an image showing proof of a “very promising” iPhone 4S unlock being “in the works”.

From Twitter:

Crazy Thanksgiving weekend! Very promising 4S unlock (http://twitpic.com/7kku4t) is in the works (Not i4, just 4S..that's crazy part)

If you’re on iOS 5 and have an iPhone 4 or 3GS on one of the earlier basebands, then you can always unlock using ultrasn0w or Gevey SIM. Ultrasn0w is a popular software-based unlock which you apply after jailbreaking while Gevey SIM is a hardware-based one. The latest version of Redsn0w allows enthusiasts to update to iOS 5 while maintaining old baseband so you will need to use that for apply tethered jailbreak.

No details have been provided regarding the unlock except that it is, surprisingly, iPhone 4S specific and “very promising”. We do, however, know that users would have to jailbreak iPhone 4S before installing the unlock.

Jailbreak for the iPhone 4S is, as our regular readers will know, also very much in the works. MuscleNerd talked about a “preliminary jailbreak” for the 4S about a month ago which we think should now be closer than ever to an actual release.

We will, of course, keep our readers updated on all the news regarding jailbreaking/unlocking of iOS devices, so stay tuned to Redmond Pie!

Today has been a crazy sort of day when it comes to news from the jailbreaking community. First we saw Chronic Dev-Team (CDT) – the folks behind GreenPois0n jailbreaking tool for iOS 4.2.1 – releasing a new tool called C-Dev Crash Reporter which allows jailbreaking enthusiasts to send crash report data to CDT (instead of Apple) so they could find exploits, then we saw an all-new jailbreaking tool for iOS 5 / 5.0.1 called Ac1dSn0w released, and now we have received news regarding iPhone 4S unlock. Details after the jump!
