These Are The First Post-Sony VAIO Laptops, Can Also Transform Into A Tablet [Video]

VAIO has just launched two new laptop computers, the VAIO Z and the VAIO Z Canvas. Head on over the jump to catch the details on these new machines that have come in after a gap of almost one year.

A year ago, Sony had sold off the VAIO computer division to a Japanese investment fund called Japan Industrial Partners (JIP), citing the radical changes that are currently sweeping through the global PC industry. Obviously, Sony didn’t push out a new VAIO product since then, and had understandably taken a year gap as well. Designed by the brand’s new ownership, and announced in Tokyo today, the VAIO Z is VAIO’s flagship ultrabook and is available as two variants, while the VAIO Z Canvas on the other hand, is more of a powerhouse tablet.

The VAIO Z with its 13.3-inch display and aluminum carbon shell body can be transformed into a tablet as well thanks to a hinge at the center of its back. The device comes with a choice of an Intel i7 or i5 processor and thanks to the SSD, the VAIO Z is stated to boot up from standby in a mere 0.3 seconds. With VAIO terming the VAIO Z as a “monster PC,” the battery concern is obviously legit. However, the company is stating that users will get around 15 hours of battery life on the machine, which is huge.

The VAIO Z Canvas meanwhile, is a typical hybrid laptop which sports a detachable keyboard and touch-screen input. Stand it up like a laptop on its back, or pick it up and use it like a tablet. With a 12.3-inch display the Z Canvas is powered by an i7 processor with a 256GB SSD onboard. Users can opt for up to 16GB of RAM; no wonder VAIO is calling it a “monster tablet.”

Where VAIO is all set for taking pre-orders for the VAIO Z ultrabook starting today in Japan for $1,600, the Z Canvas will be due somewhere in May this year.

It’s interesting to see that VAIO has made a dramatic return with its two new laptops / tablets, but the thing that would interesting to see is if users will pick one up knowing that it doesn’t carry that oh-so-famous ‘Sony’ brand mark on it.
