The iPhone 17 Air’s So Thin It Needs A Unique USB-C Port, Report Claims

Apple has long been rumored to have plans to launch a new iPhone 17 Air later this year, likely alongside an iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Leaked dummy units have suggested that the new model will be impossibly thin, and a new report suggests that means an interesting change for the USB-C port.

If the rumors turn out to be accurate, the iPhone 17 Air will measure just 5.5mm thin, which makes for an incredibly thin device. For comparison, the iPhone 16 Pro measures 8.25mm, and some people have already suggested that the new phone is so thin that it’s barely thick enough to house a USB-C port. Now, a new report by AppleTrack suggests that they’re right.

Based on dummy models shared by the YouTube channel, Apple appears to have moved the USB-C port away from the center of the device in order to give it more space for internal components. The move means that the port will not be centered, something that has not been done on previous iPhones to date, including those using Lightning ports.

It’s thought that this move will be required to allow the incredibly thin device to still have space for the components that need to be included, like the battery, and of course those USB-C components.

If everything goes the way that we expect it to, we won’t have to wait long to find out whether any of this is accurate. The new iPhones are expected to be announced in September.
