The first Google Tango smartphone is here, and it's called Phab2 Pro, and is made by Lenovo. Here are its specs, release date and price details.
Google managed to turn a lot of heads with its Project Tango initiative last year which was coupled with a tablet introduced as the test-bed for the project. The tablet has always been touted as a developer oriented gadget and was only available to buy through an invitation. This has now changed, as the Mountain View-based company releases the mysterious device for anyone willing to pay for it.
Although the tech world is clearly preoccupied by the developments of Google's head-mounted Glass device, the company has several other innovative projects running simultaneously at this moment in time. Project Tango is yet another potential game-changer from the Big G, seeking to bring human-like perception of objects and space to everyday gadgets like smartphones and tablets, and far from being a pie in the sky, the first tablet peddling Tango is expected to retail from next year. As showcased on Thursday at I/O, this device has a seemingly endless list of possibilities, and being in attendance at the event, we got a chance to get up-close and personal with the forthcoming slate. Along with Project Ara, Project Glass, and all of the other exciting innovations that Google has going right now, the company's Advanced Technologies and Projects (ATAP) team also took the wraps off Project Tango back in February. The aim of Project Tango's mapping technology is to allow common devices such as smartphones to perceive space, objects and movements in the manner that humans do, and in order to really test the resolve of its emerging invention, the Mountain View-based company has teamed up with NASA for some zero-gravity testing.
