Meta is working on a new facial recognition feature that will identify people when they are captured by the camera on its Ray-Ban smart glasses.
The feature, called Name Tag internally, would give the glasses the ability to assign a name to the person and then present information to the wearer via Meta’s AI assistant.

Documentation seen by the New York Times shows that Meta has been working on the feature since early 2025, but there will be obvious concerns among the privacy-conscious. Notably, Meta seems to be aware of those concerns with an internal memo noting that the company could use the current “political tumult” in the United States as a way to keep attention away from the feature’s release.
“We will launch during a dynamic political environment where many civil society groups that we would expect to attack us would have their resources focused on other concerns.”
A statement provided to the NYT by Meta attempted to spin the leaked feature as one that will “help millions of people connect and enrich their lives.”

“We’re building products that help millions of people connect and enrich their lives. While we frequently hear about the interest in this type of feature – and some products already exist in the market – we’re still thinking through options and will take a thoughtful approach if and before we roll anything out.”
Meta’s smart glasses already allow their wearer to capture videos and photos of anyone they can see, something that has caused problems. Reports of Meta glasses wearers using the camera to harass people have already been heard. This rumored new feature won’t go any way to help Meta’s reputation as a company with little regard for the consequences of its — or its users’ — actions.
