Jony Ive Teams Up With Marc Newson To Design The Ultimate Working Desk [IMAGES]

What do you get when you lock two of the world’s most rockstar designers in a room, infuse them with inspiration and throw a charitable cause into the equation? It might sound like the beginning of a terrible joke doing the rounds on the Internet, but the reality is actually a lot more inspiring, heart-warming and aesthetically attractive. What you actually get is a bespoke, purpose made work-surface crafted out of solid aluminum that has been designed to raise money for one of the world’s worthiest causes.

This limited edition solid aluminum desk is the collaborative production of Apple’s Jony Ive and the extremely successful Australian industrial designer Marc Newson. The whole product is machine sculpted from extremely robust aluminum and comes with the guarantee that it will be a truly one-of-a-kind piece of artwork. The two designers will rightly receive the majority of the credit for the design of the desk, but it also benefits from the fabrication skills of the Neal Faye Studio which operates as the global leader in creative aluminum products.

The desk will be thrust into the public limelight during the (RED) auction at the world famous Sotheby’s auction house on November 23rd. Ive – who is most famous for applying his design skills to iconic products like the iPhone and iPad – has recently been taking center stage for heading up the internal Apple design team that created the visual assets for the recently released iOS 7. To compliment the Sotheby’s auction both Ive and Newson will also be selecting a handful of their favorite design objects to raise as much money as possible for Bono’s (RED) charity.

We have no idea how much the desk will fetch on the day, but it’s intricate design and entirely bespoke nature will ensure that interest is extremely high for this piece. The contrasting cellular surface design looks beautifully sleek on top of the intimately crafted aluminum body with every inch of this product screaming the name of Ive and Newson. It’s also been revealed that the two designers have had design input on the customization of a Grand Piano as well as the aesthetics of a bespoke Range Rover. Let’s hope the appeal of industrial design doesn’t lure Ive away from Apple any time soon.
