iOS 17 App Store Now Tells You How Long Downloads Will Take

Apple’s iOS 17 update was announced during the WWDC 2023 event on June 5 and the company has already made the first developer beta available for download.

As people test that beta more and more we’re starting to learn extra tidbits — including the fact that it will tell people how long their download will take when downloading apps from the App Store.

The change hasn’t been confirmed by Apple as such, but multiple people have shared screenshots of the new download timer to social networks like Twitter and Maastodon.

The change only appears to happen on larger apps, and it appears alongside the button people would normally press to stop a download. Smaller downloads simply don’t show the timer at all, likely because it wouldn’t be of much use. However, larger downloads will at least give people a better indication of download time beyond trying to guess how quickly the circular icon animation is being filled.

The same download timer is also expected to be available as part of the iPadOS 17 update, too.

Apple’s iOS 17 is expected to go through a months-long beta program before it is released to the public. That’s likely to happen in or around September, when the company will also announce the iPhone 15 lineup. Those iPhones will come with iOS 17 preinstalled assuming that Apple sticks to its previous schedules.
