Apple just made it easier to update the firmware on your AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max.
The company has updated its support page with detailed instructions, clearing up some confusion around the update process.
Previously, Apple only mentioned that firmware updates happen automatically when your AirPods are charging and within Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac connected to Wi-Fi.
Now, there’s a clear step-by-step guide to help force an update if needed:
- Keep your AirPods near your connected iPhone, iPad, or Mac with Wi-Fi.
- Place your AirPods in their case and close the lid.
- Connect the case to a USB charger using a cable.
- Keep the case closed for at least 30 minutes.
- Open the case lid to reconnect your AirPods.
- Check the firmware version again.
If the firmware still doesn’t update, Apple suggests resetting your AirPods and trying again.
While this process wasn’t entirely new, Apple’s instructions now clarify key details, like the importance of using a charging cable and waiting at least 30 minutes for updates.
This update is a welcome change for AirPods users who want to ensure they’re always running the latest software for the best performance and features.
