How To Clean The Official iPhone 5s / 5c Cases The Right Way

The iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c were the big releases of the time when they were made available to the public, and rightly so, but as everyone probably remembers there were also some cool new accessories to go along with each new smartphone. If you bought a new iPhone, the chances are you at least considered picking up one of the new first-party cases, and if you went through with it, you’ve no doubt also noticed a problem.

Both cases, the leather iPhone 5s one and the rather less expensive-looking iPhone 5c option, are both susceptible to looking old before their time. In fact, the leather iPhone 5s cases that we have seen were beginning to look a little grubby after just a week or so. The obvious problem then is how to clean the cases in question, preferably without ruining them.

Thankfully the folks at Apple realize the predicament so many have found themselves in, and both the new iPhone cases have been added to the section on the company’s website that details how to clean its products.

While the cleaning instructions do cover such obvious things as taking the iPhone out of the case before cleaning it, it’s perhaps the things we shouldn’t be doing to them that is more important than what we should. Take the iPhone 5c case as an example.

To clean your iPhone 5c case, remove your iPhone from the case. Use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth to wipe the outside and the inside of the iPhone 5c case. Don’t use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives to clean the iPhone 5c case.

That’s a hefty list of things that will apparently ruin your new case. Most are pretty obvious, but considering many cleaning products contain alcohol, that in particular may be worth remembering.

The list for the iPhone 5s case isn’t quite so long.

Keep your iPhone 5s case away from prolonged intense sunlight, heat, and humidity. Exposure to water, oil, makeup, and dyed materials (such as denim) can stain tanned leathers.

The long and short of it is this though; clean your case with some water and a cloth. If it’s leather, use a spot of hand soap. If that doesn’t work, then might we suggest going for the darker colors next time around?
