Google Working On “Assistant” For Android 5.0 Jelly Bean To Rival Siri On iOS [REPORT]

The report comes from TechCrunch in which they cite “friends over at Mountain View” who claim that the feature will be called “Assistant".

From TechCrunch:

Well our friends over in Mountain View, never ones to miss out on an opportunity to compete, have come up with their own answer to Siri, Google ‘Assistant’ (earlier reports had it pegged as ‘Majel,‘ I have no idea whether that name was scrapped but do know that ‘Assistant’ is not a part of GoogleX as Majel was).

To separate itself from Apple’s Siri, Google will allow developers to work on Assistant so that they can create new uses for it. Other than that, reports we’re hearing suggest that it will be just Siri for Android done right - unlike the dozens of half-baked “Siri alternatives” out in the Android Market.

We have no reports talking about its release time frame, but we have a strong feeling that Assistant may just be included with Android 5.0 Jelly Bean which is slated to be released later this year.

Siri was introduced as one of iPhone 4S’ three major features late last year. As many of you will already know, it is a personal assistant living inside your iPhone that lets you do things like sending texts/emails, setting up reminders/appointments, starting timers, getting directions to local restaurants, shopping malls etc. etc. using the power of your voice. Now, while Microsoft is satisfied with its “TellMe” system on Windows Phone 7, Google is reportedly looking into a personal assistant for Android 5.0 Jelly Bean.

According to a new report, instead of being called “Majel”, the personal assistant will simply be called “Assistant” and come with an API that will let developers create new uses for Assistant. Check it out after the jump!
