There is now an unofficial version of PwnageTool out in the wild which can jailbreak iPhone 3GS (with old bootrom and already pwned on 3.1.2) on the latest iOS 4.0.1 firmware. The creators of the original PwnageTool has confirmed that this version has been modified and redistributed without their permission, and most importantly, it doesn’t patches some important files which are required for the ultrasn0w unlock to work properly.

Unlock iOS 4.0.1 with Ultrasn0w [How to Guide]

Taimur Asad·July 16, 2010
iOS 4.0.1 was released earlier today for iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G. Fortunately for all iPhone unlockers, the baseband wasn’t upgraded from 05.13.04, which means you can unlock your iPhone even on the latest iOS 4.0.1 firmware. Since currently there is no jailbreak tool available for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), and the current jailbreak tools for iPhone 3GS (old bootrom) are not compatible with iOS 4.0.1, so the only device which can currently be jailbroken and unlocked on iOS 4.0.1 is iPhone 3G.

Apple today has released iOS 4.0.1 to fix the much talked about iPhone 4 reception issue which has been plaguing users since its launch last month. Apart from this fix, nothing much has been added and so if you are an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G user, and you rely on a jailbreak and unlock, it is better to avoid this upgrade until new jailbreak and unlock tools are available. Comex – the guy behind Spirit jailbreak tool for iPad and iPhone / iPod touch is expected to release an update to Spirit, which will jailbreak iOS based devices on the latest firmware.

Downgrade iOS 4.1 iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G and iPod touch to iOS 4 / iPhone 3.1.3 / 3.1.2 [How to Guide]

Taimur Asad·July 15, 2010
iOS 4.1 Beta was seeded to developers yesterday. Since the iOS 4.1 is currently only jailbreakable on iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G (non-MC model), you may want to downgrade your other iOS based devices from iOS 4.1 so that you can jailbreak them on iOS 4, or iOS 3.1.3 / 3.1.2 (formerly iPhone 3.1.3 or 3.1.2). The following step by step guide will help you rollback / downgrade to iOS 4, iPhone 3.1.3 and 3.1.2 from iOS 4.1 Beta as long as you have SHSH blobs saved for the respective firmwares for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G and iPod touches.

The first Beta of iOS 4.1 has been released, and the good news is that Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 for both Windows and Mac is compatible with this version of iOS. Simply download the required iOS 4.1 firmware file for iPod touch 2G (non-MC model) and use Redsn0w to jailbreak it. This version of Redsn0w of course will work only on iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G (non-MC model) only.

Taimur Asad·July 15, 2010
Yes you read that right ! The newly released iOS 4.1 is jailbreakable using Redsn0w 0.9.5b5. All you need is the latest iOS 4.1 firmware for iPhone 3G or iPod touch 2G (non-MC Models) and you can jailbreak it using Redsn0w on Windows and Mac. Again, this is strictly for iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G (non-MC models) only. If your iPhone 3G relies on an unlock, you MUST STAY AWAY from iOS 4.1 for now.
