Apple TV 4 Supports 3DTV Games And Apps On Compatible Sets

Apple’s new fourth-generation Apple TV comes with a lot of marketed hardware, software and feature improvements that the Cupertino-based company is keen to publicize. But it also seems that it comes with a little trick up its sleeve that hasn’t thus far made it onto any the official promotional material or website. Consumers opting to purchase the new Apple TV set-top box will be pleased to learn that the set-top-box is capable of supporting stereoscopic 3D apps on connected 3DTVs.

As much as you would imagine that Apple would want to wax lyrical about such a feature, it seems that the company is playing the silent game on this one.

The discovery of this feature first made news after Irish developer Steve Troughton-Smith tried out Bugdom 2 by Pangea Software on his 3DTV, and consequently posted a photo of the game on the Internet, as seen in the image below.

The 3D capabilities of the new Apple TV were then confirmed by Pangea Software, a company with a fairly long history of producing games for Apple’s software platforms including iOS and OS X. Pangea’s confirmation also dropped in the information on when can we expect the tvOS App Store to be littered with 3D Apple TV games? Via its Twitter handle, Pangea announced that:

All of our tvOS games will support 3DTV 🙂

It seems that the age of 3D gaming on the Apple TV is upon us, right now. The 3D compatible offerings by Pangea for Apple TV 4 include Air Wings, Bugdom 2, Nanosaur 2, Nucleus, as well as a seriously fun robot adventure game titled Otto Matic.

In an official press release, Pangea founder Brian Greenstone stated that he and his company have “been waiting for this for many years”. It wasn’t exactly a difficult decision for the company to release five titles for the Apple TV given its advanced features and capabilities that will enhance our living rooms. Additionally, the company has also announced that “all of the games are Game Controller compatible, so they can be played with either the Siri Remote or with any tvOS compatible Gamepad.”

For those interested, the new Apple TV 4 is now on sale, available both from online and retail Apple Stores worldwide. It’s also available in select third-party partner stores such as Best Buy in the U.S.
