Apple’s M5 MacBook Pros might not have been around very long, but a new report says that the company is already planning the launch of its first MacBook Ultra as soon as early 2027.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, as highlighted by MacRumors, Apple’s highest-end MacBook Pro models will get a major refresh in early 2027, with the laptops gaining touchscreen OLED displays. They’ll also get a Dynamic Island like Apple’s latest iPhones, and sport new M6-series chips.

As a result of the huge changes the MacBook Pro will undergo, Apple is expected to rename the machine the MacBook Ultra to highlight its key differences when compared to the current models.
Notably, there is also a suggestion that Apple intends to make the MacBook Ultra the first Apple laptop to support cellular connectivity, something that MacBook owners of all shapes and sizes have been crying out for for years.
If accurate, Apple’s new M6 Pro and M6 Max chips will be based on TSMC’s advanced 2nm manufacturing process, which will use less power and offer improved performance. It’s expected that the new laptops will also be thinner than the current MacBook Pro models.
However, there were originally hopes that the MacBook Ultra would ship in late 2026, but the push to early 2027 seems most likely due to the current RAM chip pricing and shortages. It’s also possible that, should the situation worsen, Apple may have to push the launch of the MacBook Ultra even further.
