This New watchOS 26 Gesture Is Limited To Newer Apple Watches

When Apple announced the watchOS 26 software update during the WWDC event on June 9, there was a lot to take in. So much so that we’re still learning new things that passed us by, including the fact that a new watchOS 26 gesture will be limited to newer Apple Watches only.

MacRumors reports that the new Wrist Flick gesture allows users to dismiss notifications and return to their watch face without touching the Apple Watch itself.

The gesture is triggered when the wearer turns their wrist over and then back to its original orientation, with the watch using its gyroscope and accelerometer to sense the change. It’s similar to the existing Double Tap gesture, but you’ll need to have an Apple Watch released in the last couple of years if you want to use it.

As MacRumors notes, the new Wrist Flick gesture is limited to the Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2. We can also obviously expect that the new feature will be available on any new models that are announced this fall, too.

If everything goes the way we expect it to, based on rumors and Apple’s usual release cadence, we expect at least two new models to be unveiled in September. Those include an Apple Watch Series 11 and an Apple Watch Ultra 2, while a new version of the Apple Watch SE is also a possibility.

The new watches will most likely be announced during the same event that will see the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro devices announced in the second week of September.
