Tesla is discontinuing the Model S and Model X electric vehicles in the second quarter of 2026, CEO Elon Musk has said in an earnings call with investors. The move will allow the company to instead focus on robotics.
The move will be a surprise to Tesla fans and potential future owners of the two premium vehicles — there was no prior hint that the company would make this move.
The Verge reports that Musk’s reason for canceling the two electric vehicles was to make room at the company’s Fremont factory for the Optimus robot to be manufactured.
“It’s time to basically bring the Model S and X programs to an end with an honorable discharge, because we’re really moving into a future that is based on autonomy,” he said. “So if you’re interested in buying a Model S and X, now would be the time to order it.”
The Model S was first released in 2012 and quickly became a favorite among buyers looking to pick up a luxury EV. The Model X is essentially an SUV version of the Model S, complete with powered gull-wing doors. The Model X debuted in 2015, but the report notes that sales of both models had been on the decline.
Tesla had long since focused on the Model 3 and Model 3, baby versions of the Model S and Model X. Customers may now wonder how long they will be around before Musk decides Tesla will go all-in on Optimus.
