Samsung Announces Galaxy Z Fold 8, Ultra, Flip 8, New Wearables

Samsung has used today’s Samsung Unpacked event to announce as many as three new foldable phones as well as a pair of new smartwatches.

The new phones arrive as Apple is expected to announce its first foldable device this fall, while new Apple Watches are also on the horizon.

Samsung has long been at the top of its foldable game, and these new announcements look unlikely to disappoint.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will sit at the top of Samsung’s new smartphone lineup and starts at $2,100.

On the outside, this phone will have a large 6.5-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2x display while the internal 8-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2x screen will be the star of the show. Both displays have a 120Hz refresh rate, so you can expect smooth scrolling and gaming.

Foldable phones can often suffer in the camera department. In this case, Samsung has given the Galaxy Z Fold Ultra a 200-megapixel main sensor, which is joined by a 50-megapixel ultrawide and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera. Support for 3x optical and 30x Space Zoom is notable, as is the support for 8K video capture at 30fps.

Samsung says its new phone will be just 4.1mm thin when it’s opened up, with a weight of 215 grams.

Galaxy Z Fold 8

For those looking to spend a little less, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will start at $1,900. It’s still far from cheap, but there are some compromises of note. The foldable display is a 7.6-inch part with a QXGQ+ resolution. It’s also a Dynamic AMOLED display, and notably, it has a 4:3 ratio.

On the outside, you’ll find a 5.5-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2x screen.

In terms of cameras, there’s no telephoto option, while the main camera has a 50-megapixel sensor. A 50-megapixel ultrawide is also present, with 10x digital zoom support. The 8K/30 video capture is still present.

Galaxy Z Flip 8

The Galaxy Z Flip 8 is here for fans of flip phones, and it has a 4,1-inch HD+ Super AMOLED display on the outside. That display has an adaptive refresh rate and switches between 60Hz and 120Hz when required.

The internal display is the important component, and it’s a 6.9-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2x part with an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate.

A 50-megapixel main camera is joined by a 12-megapixel ultrawide, with support for 4K video at 60fps is also worth noting. A 10x digital zoom is also present.

The new Flip 8 will start at $1,200.

Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2

Samsung also announced new smartwatches, with the Galaxy Watch 9 set to gain a new, larger battery that should result in a longer-lasting device. The watch also gained a new, brighter 3,000-nit display.

The bigger change comes to the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 which has a new 5,000-nit brightness and a larger battery. Samsung has been able to shrink the Ultra 2 down, making it 12% thinner than its predecessor for a better on-wrist fit.

In terms of pricing, the Watch 9 starts at $380 for the Bluetooth model, while the Ultra 2 costs $700.
