PlayStation Will Stop Making Physical Games In 2028

Sony has announced that it will end support for disk-based games from January 2008. From that point, no new games will be released in a physical format for the PS5 or a potential PS6 console.

Following the move, Sony PlayStation games will only be available in digital form via the PlayStation Store.

Sid Shulman, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s senior director of content communications, argued the move was the natural direction for Sony.

This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.

This move comes as Sony continues to be rumored to have plans to launch its PS6 console in late 2027 or early 2028. If that is indeed the case, we can assume that the PS6 will launch with no disc drive available. The PS6 will clearly be a digital-only console.

Companies like Sony and Microsoft have long been keen for customers to move to a digital distribution model rather than buy games on physical media. This approach removes the used game market from the equation. Game companies don’t make any money from the sale of a used game and see that as lost revenue.
