Next iPhone Could Be Called iPhone 7 Instead Of 6s

While the arguments over the supposed features of the September bound iPhone 6s continue to gain traction, here’s an interesting question; will the new smartphone from Cupertino be labeled as the iPhone 6s or the iPhone 7? According to new information, it just might be the latter. Head over the jump to find out why.

Whenever Apple takes a major leap in its smartphone lineup every two years, it goes with a new number to make things prominent, and hence, the iPhone 6s after the iPhone 6 seems fairly obvious, with the iPhone 7 bound to be released next year. Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities has a pleasant habit of breaking some pretty interesting news to its investors regarding Apple’s upcoming plans, and has a respectable track record in doing so. According to Kuo, there’s a good chance that the next smartphone from Apple would be called the iPhone 7, where the ‘s’ badge would be dropped.

Kuo suggests that this is owing to the major hardware changes that Apple is planning to pack into the new iPhone, including the Force Touch technology, which could open up the door to some completely new features on the smartphone. Kuo further said that the iPhone will have an FPC-made capacitive Force Touch sensor built into the display, and is completely different to the tech found in the Apple Watch and the new 12-inch Retina MacBook’s trackpad. “We believe that iPhone’s Force Touch sensor doesn’t directly detect the pressure applied by fingers. Instead, it monitors the contact area on which the finger touches the screen to decide how big the pressure is.” The changes are so significant that Kuo believes Apple may just go with the iPhone 7 branding this time.

Personally, I believe if Apple is to drop the ‘s’ badge, it would do so for reasons that are apparent to the consumers, which could include the introduction of new features rather than some under-the-hood changes which the average Joe would not even be much bothered about.

Kuo has also claimed that Apple will be sticking to the same sizes this year – 4.7 and 5.5-inches. Interestingly, Kuo also drops a word in about the rumored 4-inch iPhone, telling us that Apple is unlikely to release such a phone this year, at least.
